Siae Explained: Music Rights For Your Wedding In Italy

SIAE and Wedding in Italy: A Clear, Stess-Free Guide for Couples

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Italy, chances are you’ve heard the word SIAE mentioned by venues, musicians, or planners — and it may sound confusing or even intimidating at first.

Let’s simplify it.

Below is a clear, practical explanation of what SIAE is, when it’s required, how much it costs, and how it’s paid, so you know exactly what to expect and can plan without surprises.

What is SIAE?

SIAE (Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori) is the Italian authority that protects copyright and music authors’ rights.

In simple terms, SIAE is not a wedding tax. It’s a copyright fee that compensates composers, musicians, and artists when their music is played during an event.

The fee applies to all music written less than 100 years ago.

When is SIAE required at a wedding?

SIAE is mandatory whenever music is used, regardless of:

  • Live music (bands, musicians, singers)
  • Recorded music (DJ sets)
  • Background or ambient music
  • Music played through speakers or sound systems (even playlists)

In Italy, all types of entertainment – live or recorded – fall under SIAE regulations.

How many times does SIAE need to be paid?

SIAE is linked to the location where music is played, not to the wedding day itself.

  • One location

If your entire wedding takes place in one single venue (ceremony + reception), SIAE is paid only once.

  • Multiple locations

If your wedding includes different locations, SIAE must be paid for each location, for example:

Ceremony in a church

Reception in a villa or hotel

In this case, two separate SIAE permits are required.

Exception: classical music during the ceremony

If only classical music is used during the ceremony, SIAE is not required.

However, there is an important condition:

You must submit a complete playlist of all pieces performed to the local SIAE office

All music must genuinely fall under the “classical” category (public domain)

If even one non-classical piece is included, SIAE becomes mandatory.

Welcome Events & Post-wedding celebrations

Be aware that SIAE is also required for all additional events, such as:

  • Welcome party
  • Rehearsal dinner
  • Pool party
  • Farewell brunch

This applies even if only recorded music is played.

DJ sets, playlists, and background music through speakers are all considered copyrighted music.

How much does SIAE cost?

The cost of SIAE varies depending on:

  • Type of entertainment (live music, recorded music, or both)
  • Type of event (wedding, wedding side event, birthday party, etc.)
  • Number of guests

SIAE publishes official price tables every year, and amounts may change annually.

Indicative costs for a wedding day (up to 100 guests)

  • Live music: approx. €180
  • Recorded music (DJ or playlists): approx. €160
  • Live + recorded music: approx. €400 total

Collateral events (welcome party, etc.)

  • Approx. €280 per event

These figures are indicative but reliable for planning purposes.

Who pays the SIAE fee?

Legally, the SIAE fee is paid by the organizer of the entertainment—which, for weddings, means the couple.

How is SIAE paid?

SIAE can be paid online through the official SIAE portal.

This requires:

  • Creating an account
  • Entering details about the venue
  • Specifying the type of event and music

Because this process can be time-consuming and technical, when a wedding planner is involved, this is usually handled as part of the planning service.

In some cases, venues pay SIAE on behalf of the couple. When this happens, the cost may be higher, as the venue may apply an administrative surcharge.

The SIAE permit: a crucial document

Once payment is completed, SIAE immediately issues an official music permit.

The permit must be downloaded from the SIAE portal

It must be delivered to the venue where music is played

Without this permit, music cannot legally be played—live or recorded.
